What is a birth assistant?

A birth assistant (also known as a midwife's assistant) is a trained professional who provides assistance to a  midwife with births in out-of-hospital settings (home &/ birth center settings).

 

A birth assistant performs several duties including taking maternal and fetal vital signs, charting, setting up equipment, keeping the birth space clean and organized, providing assistance in emergency situations and more. Are there prerequisites to be considered for enrollment?

1.) Must be a Black woman, 18 years old or older who is a committed independent learner, self-motivated and a task-oriented leader

2.) Must be an aspiring midwife (Traditional  Midwife, Certified Professional Midwife, Certified-Nurse Midwife, or Certified Midwife)

3.) Proof of a valid U.S. government-issued photo identification 

 

4.) Proof of a High School Diploma, equivalent or higher

 

5.) Physical Requirements: Students are required to have a full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Light Work is required - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or when it requires sitting most of the time. 

 

6.) Research your state's midwifery laws in regards to birth / midwife's assistant. (IF APPLICABLE) Verify with your local licensed midwife as well about their hiring requirements in conjunction to your state's midwifery law. (Must submit proof of your state's midwifery law if your application is approved).

 

7.) Good support systems for yourself & your family (e.i.: Healthy networking relationships and Reliable childcare)

 

8.) Able to be on-call for births including nights when scheduled

 

9.) Reliable transportation (Own your own or have access to a functioning vehicle)

 

10.) Access to a computer, laptop and internet access

 

11.) Functioning cell phone with reliable phone carrier service

 

11.) The ability to purchase equipment and supplies for the completion of your program. The cost varies depending upon the source.

13.) The ability to pay your Tuition and fees.

*Purchasing the Venipuncture Course & Training Kit is MANDATORY along with the completion of the certification program provided within the kit. Your venipuncture certification is required to complete PHASE ONE of our program. EXEMPTION: Healthcare workers may be exempt on a case by case bases from the Venipuncture Course based upon an approved active licensure & / certification. A request is to made via email to blacksistersbirth@gmail.com with proof of certification to be reviewed for consideration.

What is the tuition cost for this program?

Tuition for Black Sisters Birth Academy® Online Birth Assistant Program is $3,000 USD. (Subject to change)

Are scholarships or financial aid available?

Black Sisters Birth Academy® currently do not offer financial aid or scholarships. Payment plans options are available through PayPal.

What payment options are available?

PayPal offers single payment or PayPal Pay Later options.

Is my program payment refundable?

No. Any /all payments or fees made to Black Sisters Birth Academy® is non-refundable.  

REFUND POLICY

Enrolling into Black Sisters Birth Academy® is non-refundable. Any /all payments or fees made to Black Sisters Birth Academy® is non-refundable. A request to cancel or withdraw from Black Sisters Birth Academy® will be granted with a formal email submission to blacksistersbirth@gmail.com regarding the request. PLEASE NOTE: Any/all payments submitted prior to the decision to withdraw from the academy are non-refundable. If you are not at a level where you are financially capable to invest at this level, please do not apply! 

What are the requirements for certification?

The following components are REQUIRED to complete your Birth Assistant Program Certification:

PHASE ONE:

  • Completion of our Online Birth Assistant Certification Course

  • Phlebotomy, Venipuncture, and IV Techniques Certification (External Online Course.)*

  • Proof of NRP and CPR Certification (External Courses)

PHASE TWO:

  • Clinical Experience with your local licensed midwife(s). Attendance at 3 prenatal visits (at 36 weeks +) and 3 out-of-hospital births is required.*

*Purchasing the Venipuncture Course & Training Kit is MANDATORY along with the completion of the certification program provided within the kit. Your venipuncture certification is required to complete PHASE ONE of our program. EXEMPTION: Healthcare workers may be exempt on a case by case bases from the Venipuncture Course based upon an approved active licensure & / certification. A request is to made via email to blacksistersbirth@gmail.com with proof of certification to be reviewed for consideration.

*Three Continuity of Care Cases are required for our program's completion. Attendance at 3 prenatal visits (at 36 weeks +) and 3 out-of-hospital births is required. These cases are to be done under the supervision of a community midwife. If any of your cases are transferred before their birth you may replace that birth with the attendance of a different birth in its place.  You MUST successfully complete your online course with submitted proof of your CPR, NRP and Venipuncture certifications before attending your clinical experiences (PHASE TWO). 

How is the online course structured?

The Birth Assistant Course is recorded modules with external assignments to be completed within the course. You will receive a certificate of completion for the online course after all assignments are completed and after you have successfully passed your exit exam with an 80% or higher. You have six (6) months to complete all addition certifications (CPR, NRP and Venipuncture) within PHASE ONE. You have up to ONE YEAR from the date of enrollment to complete PHASE TWO. All Payments MUST be paid in FULL before certifications are issued.

Who is offering this certification?

Black Sisters Birth Academy® will be issuing the Certification of Program Completion.

Do you offer in-person skill training?

In-person skill training is provided in the Academy's Mentorship Program. The Mentorship Program is currently unavailable at this time and will be announced when applications becomes available.

Can I work as a Birth Assistant after the completion this program?

After you have received your program certification with us you may seek gainful employment as a birth assistant dependent upon your state laws. Please noted that each state, midwife or institution such as a birth center determines what their requirements are prior to hiring. Please check with your local midwives and your state's midwifery laws in regards to requirements to credentialing and scope of practices of a birth / midwife's assistant.
