Black Sisters Birth Academy® equips Black birthworkers with the clinical preparedness and professional confidence required to serve as essential partners to community midwives. AFTER OUR CERTIFICATION YOU CAN...

  • Seek employment as a certified birth assistant with community midwives

  • Under the supervision of a midwife you can: Take vital signs of mother and baby

  • Assist with medical documentation

  • Set up birth related equipment

  • Keep the birth space clean and organized

  • Provide assistance in obstetrical emergencies

  • Assist with breastfeeding and other essential birth assistant duties. 

Academy Prerequisites

I honor the diverse clinical paths our sisters take. To ensure the safety of our birthing families and the excellence of this academy, all applicants must meet the following standards. These prerequisites form the foundation of the Black Sisters Birth Academy® Standard for Clinical Readiness. These standards ensure that every sister crossing the bridge is professionally prepared for the clinical precision and critical discernment required at the midwife's bedside.

I. Core Requirements

  • Identity & Age: Must be a Black woman, 18 years or older.

  • Education: High School Diploma, GED, or higher.

  • Physical Readiness: The work of a birth assistant is active and hands-on. Students should have a full range of motion and the physical stamina required to support birthing families throughout active labor and the immediate postpartum period.

II. Professional Pathways (Must meet ONE)

1. The Community-Based Birth Doula Path:

  • Must provide proof of a valid Birth or Full-Spectrum Doula certification. 

  • Must provide proof of 3 out-of-hospital birth experiences (Home or Birth Center) within the last 24 months.

  • Active Practice: Must provide a professional website/social media link OR a midwife reference.

2. The Midwifery Student Path:

  • Must provide proof of an active NARM PEP preceptorship (Preceptorship Agreement or Clinical Site Affiliation) or a Letter of Good Standing from your Midwifery Preceptor.

3. The Practicing Birth Assistant Path:

  • Must provide a current employment verification letter from a midwifery practice or free-standing birth center.

4. The Healthcare Professional Path (RN, LPN, PA, CNA, CMA):

Note on Professional Standard for Community Transition: Transitioning from an institutionalized healthcare setting to the community birth environment requires a significant shift in clinical autonomy and professional responsibility. To ensure the safety of our birthing families and the sustainability of our graduates' careers, the following pathway requirements are in place:

  • Must provide proof of a valid clinical license (RN, LPN, PA) or state-recognized certification (CNA, CMA).

Must provide ONE of the following:

The Clinical Transitioner (Hybrid Pathway):

  • Criteria: Valid clinical license/certification + L&D/MCH experience OR Valid clinical license/certification + Proof of 3 Out-of-Hospital Births.

  • Requirement: Enrollment in the Hybrid Birth Assistant Program.

 

The Out-Of-Hospital-Ready Professional (Online Pathway):

  • Criteria: Valid clinical license/certification + L&D/MCH experience OR Proof of 3 Out-of-Hospital Births.

  • Mandatory Requirement: A Midwife Attestation Letter confirming a current preceptorship/agreement to supervise your Phase Two clinical requirements is required for all Online applicants.

A Note on Capacity: Both the Online and Hybrid pathways are clinically rigorous, requiring disciplined time for the didactic curriculum and the unpredictable, on-call nature of the clinical phase. To ensure your success, I require all applicants to assess their current professional and personal bandwidth. You must be prepared to complete the 3 Continuity of Care cases (prenatals and births) required for certification.
