Black Sisters Birth Academy® is an online curriculum-based program designed to support your development as you train to become a certified birth assistant through module reviews, virtual skill days, and external assignments inclusive of clinical experiences with community midwives.  Enrollment is a limited number of students. If your application is accepted you are required to complete the remainder of your application process.


1.) Complete your online application below to be considered for enrollment.

2.) Application Fee: $100 USD (Non-Refundable)

  • Copy of a valid U.S. government-issued photo identification (U.S. Driver's License, U.S. Passport / Card or Permanent Resident Card)

  • Copy of a High School Diploma, equivalent or higher

  • Submit a document (PDF File Format) with the link to your state's midwifery laws

Completed applications will be reviewed within 2 to 3 business days.


1.) Must be a Black woman, 18 years old or older who is a committed independent learner, self-motivated and a task-oriented leader


2.) Must be an aspiring midwife (Traditional Midwife, Certified Professional Midwife, Certified-Nurse Midwife, or Certified Midwife) or an aspiring birth assistant

3.) Proof of a valid U.S. government-issued photo identification 


4.) Proof of a High School Diploma, equivalent or higher

5.) Physical Requirements: Students are required to have a full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Light Work is required - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or when it requires sitting most of the time. 


6.) Must research your state's midwifery laws in regards to birth/midwife's assistant (IF APPLICABLE). Verify with your local licensed midwife as well about their hiring requirements in conjunction to your state's midwifery law. 


7.) Good support systems for yourself & your family (e.i.: Healthy networking relationships, Reliable childcare, etc.)


8.) Able to be on-call for births including nights when scheduled


9.) Reliable transportation (Own your own or have access to a functioning vehicle)


10.) Access to a computer, laptop and internet access


11.) Functioning cell phone with reliable service


12.) The ability to purchase equipment and supplies for the completion of your program. The cost varies depending upon the source.

13.) The ability to pay your Tuition and fees.



*EXEMPTION: Healthcare workers may be exempt on a case by case bases from the Venipuncture Course based upon an approved active licensure & / certification. A request can be made via email to with proof of certification to be reviewed for consideration.


  • Clinical Experience with a community midwife(s)

Three Continuity of Care Cases are required for our program's completion. Attendance at three (3) prenatal visits (at 36 weeks +) and three (3) out-of-hospital births is required. These cases are to be done under the supervision of a community midwife. You MUST successfully complete your online course with submitted proof of your CPR, NRP and Venipuncture certifications (PHASE ONE) before attending your clinical experiences (PHASE TWO).
